Two weeks ago we got word that an entirely new type of keyboard (opens in new tab) was on its way. Wooting, the developers of our favorite gaming keyboard (opens in new tab), the Wooting Two HE (opens in new tab), are working on a new keyboard design. At first glance it looks like an April Fool's joke, but Wooting UwU is the real deal, and we now know more about the founder's campaign that will go along with this unique product.

The UwU is a dedicated board designed for the rhythm game osu! A keyboard made for a single game may seem like overkill, but osu! is a mainstay of the free-to-play rhythm game community and has been around for years, and thanks to social media, its popularity It is experiencing a resurgence.

The fact that it is free and that a thriving community is constantly creating new levels means that osu! is a treasure trove for content creators. apps like TikTok allow players to share their frantic efforts, and osu's funky beats and visual nature of the platform has made it work quite well! Furthermore, with only three keys required, it is surprisingly accessible despite its difficulty level; it makes a lot of sense for board makers like Wooting to get in on the action with their UwU boards.

Starting with the basic model, we have learned that there will be three variants with three keyboards: the Wooting UwU starts at $50 / €50 and includes a braided USB cable, a spare Wooting analog lekker (opens in new tab) switch, four base model board with collectible keycaps included. The color is primarily cream with navy stripes and pink highlights at the top. The face key is white with a cute UwU design. It can be placed in a pocket without getting in the way.

Wooting knows its market, so the next in the series is the Wooting UwU RGB. Whereas the previous UwU was covered in navy blue, this UwU has RGB lighting and the keys are transparent. The basic model comes with a travel case, and the package price is $69.69/€69.69. There is also a black version called the Wooting UwU RGB Stealth Edition.

This is a fair price to pay for three keys on a regular board. Given that it is a niche device and comes with all the analog features of Wooting, including the use of software, it actually seems fine. I am almost ready to get into osu! Just to make it more worth owning. I also hope to see more options for high quality tailor-made controllers for gaming other than the usual keyboard format.
