Nvidia's RTX 4070 will reportedly arrive in April, but it appears to be much later than the 4070 Ti.

Following the leak of benchmarks for Nvidia's RTX 4060 (opens in new tab) comes news that its slightly larger sister, the RTX 4070, will have an April release date.

Our old friends at Videocardz (opens in new tab) have obtained what they say is an embargoed document detailing Nvidia's RTX 4070 launch plans. The exact release date for this new graphics card has yet to be detailed. However, the GPU will reportedly hit store shelves in April. [Specs-wise, the RTX 4070 is expected to have 5,888 of Nvidia's pixel-cleaning CUDA cores and a maximum boost clock of 2,475 MHz. This compares to the confirmed, launched, and benchmarked RTX 4070 Ti (open in new tab) with 7,680 cores and a maximum clock of 2,610 MHz.

The 4070 has the same 192-bit memory bus, 12GB of GDDR6X, and 504GB/s bandwidth. Overall, the 4070 is said to be capable of 29TFLOPS of raw computation. This is well behind the 40TFLOPS of the RTX 4070 Ti.

To further explain the situation, this 29TFLOPS would put the new RTX 4070 on the same level as the previous generation Ampere RTX 3080 (open in new tab). This is still nearly 50% faster than the 20TFLOPS that the previous generation's counterpart, the RTX 3070 (opens in new tab), carried. [Of course, there is more to gaming performance than TFLOPS. However, it is interesting to note that the RTX 4070 has exactly the same number of CUDA cores (5,888) as the old RTX 3070.

Thus, much of the performance increase is due to higher clock speeds. The old RTX 3070 was up to 1,725 MHz, while the new RTX 4070 is at 2,475 MHz.

The final piece of the puzzle is price: with the RTX 4070 Ti at $799, at what price do we hope the RTX 4070 will launch? Since the old RTX 3070 was a $499 GPU at launch and all previous RTX 40 series cards have been more expensive than this model, we are guessing $599 or thereabouts.

In any case, the RTX 4070 is likely to be somewhere between $549 and $649. In other words, it's not cheap. But you knew that.

Too bad for Moore.
