Inject the Dead Cells Castlevania DLC directly into my veins.

Inject the Dead Cells Castlevania DLC directly into my veins.

"Castlevania" is in a very strange place right now: there hasn't been a decent new title since 2014's "Lords of Shadow 2," developed by Mercury Steam, and Konami hasn't developed a mainline title on its own since 2010's "Harmony of Despair" (except for the mobile title "Grimoire of Souls"). Despite this drought, Castlevania is arguably more popular and beloved than ever, thanks to Netflix's excellent animated series and the determination of various indie developers to not rest on their laurels.

Some games, like "Vampire Survivors," wear their love of "Castlevania" on both sleeves, and the lineage is clear even if they are not official products. Motion Twin's action roguelike is similarly inspired by Castlevania in its elements and (as first announced late last year) has been so successful that it has received a massive DLC called Return to Castlevania.

The developers have released a new trailer showcasing this DLC and announced that it will be released on March 6. If you like Castlevania, this DLC is going to hit all the right buttons, and the clear callback to the Dracula sequence at the beginning of Symphony of the Night hits me straight in the veins: it may be the closest thing to a 2D Castlevania.

"That means what you see there is about 5% of the content on offer," Motion Twin writes." I must have seen the boss fight for the first time, and if I do say so myself, I think it looks pretty good.

"You may have noticed the iconic Vampire Killer track playing at the end! Recall that this DLC includes 51 tracks from the original Castlevania and 12 tracks reworked in the Dead Cells style by resident musician Yoann 'Valmont' Laulan."

In other words, shut up over here and take my money. In the trailer, we see a full set of Castlevania enemies and elements, including werewolves, vampires, and, of course, skeletons. This DLC is a self-contained adventure, and Richter and Alucard send you off with new monster-slaying tools and abilities. Alucard's sword is unveiled here, along with his teleportation ability, and players will face bosses such as Dracula and Death in two new biomes.

It's nice to have something to get excited about in the non-animated Castlevania. In other Dead Cells news, it looks like it's going to join the ranks of great indies that turn into board games. It's not out yet, but a kickstarter for Dead Cells will be happening soon: all we have so far is a nice box art.
