Final Fantasy 14 halts automatic demolition of homes after Turkey-Syria earthquake

The housing demolition timer for Final Fantasy 14 has been suspended again by Square Enix. (Open in new tab)

The suspension only affects players in the Chaos and Light data center, a collection of European servers. Players on servers located in the US, Japan, and Oceania data centers still have the housing demolition timer in effect.

"The entire FF14 development and operations team would like to extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected by the major earthquake that struck southeastern Turkey on Monday, February 6." In consideration of the damage and other factors, we have decided to temporarily suspend the automatic demolition of apartment complexes."

MMORPG has a rather odd housing system (opens in new tab). Nothing is instantiated. On the one hand, it's great to stroll through a neighborhood and see everyone's intricately designed homes and front yards. On the other hand, it creates a huge shortage and a cutthroat market.

In an attempt to keep housing fluid, Final Fantasy 14 usually automatically demolishes a house if the owner cannot access it within 45 days. This timer is suspended for the time being and will resume once Square Enix restarts the automatic demolition counter. As for when that will be, according to Lodestone's post, the team will "monitor the situation over the next few days" and announce when the automatic demolition resumes.

The demolition of the homes has been suspended for a significant period of time over the past few years. It was originally suspended when the Covid-19 pandemic first broke out in March 2020 and lasted until December of that year. It was then suspended again shortly after the release of the endwalkers due to heavy crowding; it was scheduled to resume in March 2022, but that plan was cancelled following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On January 10 of this year, after "careful consideration," the suspension was finally lifted.

Donations to help earthquake victims can be made through the Red Cross (opens in new tab), DEC (opens in new tab), or Oxfam (opens in new tab).
