General
EVE Online's far-future boardroom sharks are using their power for good with an in-game charity drive.

For many of us, EVE Online remains a distant presence: "Oh, it's a game of cosmic spreadsheets where cold-blooded operators constantly enron each other." How could God not bless the corporate samurais of EVE Online when they pull off another heist of the century (opens in new tab) in the midst of a supernova (opens in new tab) or an alien invasion (opens in new tab).

As first reported by Massively Overpowered (opens in new tab), EVE's developer, CCP, has resumed its PLEX for Good (opens in new tab) initiative to give the sharks in the boardrooms of the far future We are giving them another opportunity to prove it. For those of you who don't know, PLEX (short for "Pilot's License Extension") is one of EVE's two in-game currencies; PLEX is a premium option that can be purchased with real world money or with ISK, EVE's other currency. also traded as an in-game commodity and is a key component in EVE's famously complex and reactive virtual economy.

CCP launched PLEX for Good to raise funds for victims of humanitarian crises such as the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and most recently the war in Ukraine Since 2005, PLEX for Good has raised over $1.2 million.

EVE Online players can take PLEX out of the vault and contract it to a special in-game NPC (opens in new tab). Funds will be donated to Doctors Without Borders (opens in new tab) and the Turkish charity Ahbap (opens in new tab), and players have until February 21 to make their donations. If you are a member of the public without a PLEX like me, you can donate directly to these organizations via the preceding link.
