Horror Master John Carpenter on 'Refurbished' Dead Space: 'It's a Great Game'

Our own favorable review of EA Motive's recent remastering of "Dead Space" (opens in new tab) adds a prominent voice: John Carpenter, horror legend and director of "Halloween," "The Thing" and "Alive."

"EA's refurbished 'Dead Space' is exciting and scary. It's a great game."

I wish my own review were as crisp. I especially like the use of the word "refurbished" to describe the video game remake. There is a warm, lived-in, cozy feeling to the phrase, like a freshly reupholstered 90s station wagon, and the remake of Demon's Souls for PS5 opened with a nice Victorian brownstone painted white! It looked like a concept, but in stark contrast.

He is an avid fan of "Fallout," "Horizon," and "Dead Space," and has expressed interest in directing the "Dead Space" film adaptation (opens in new tab), should it come to fruition.

Carpenter first floated the idea in a 2013 interview with Game Informer: "I think it's a great idea, because people get on a spaceship that's abandoned and closed, and they have to activate the spaceship, and there's something inside the ship. It's all wonderful stuff." Carpenter also expressed his appreciation for the less beloved Dead Space 3.

While I myself am not eager for a "Dead Space" movie, I am hoping for a Carpenter comeback in the 2020s, in whatever form he may take. However, I am hoping for a Carpenter comeback in the 2020s, in whatever form he may take. That said, kudos to him for being able to laugh it off and shoulder some of the blame. One could probably start seven Reddit threads complaining about "lazy developers."
