Developer of "Terraria" wants to make 2023 the "Year of Terraria Cross-Play".

One feature "Terraria" players have long wanted is cross-play between PC, console, and mobile versions of the game, and according to a new "State of the Game" post on Terraria's Steam page, that dream is getting closer and closer, but developer Re-Logic has not yet guaranteed that it will come to fruition.

"2023 is going to be quite a year for Terraria, based on our plans. Hopefully, it will go down as the year of 'Terraria' crossplay, among other things," Re-Logic wrote.

The post was a bit more specific about crossplay, adding that the development teams for the console and mobile versions of "Terraria" "started the new year by working on upgrading the core engine and software library versions in preparation for the crossplay release."

The team also explained a bit more specifically about Crossplay.

Cross-play development is actively underway, but keep this caveat in mind: Re-Logic is cautious about official announcements, with Re-Logic producer Whitney Spinks writing on Twitter, "Cross-play is not guaranteed though, We really want to make it happen!" He stated.

Ted Murphy, Re-Logic's head of business, said, "Definitely going to go all out - the plan is solid!" He added.

Cross-play in "Terraria" will require a multiplayer system that can work with Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android network services. In fact, there are already mods for Terraria servers that enable cross-play by "modifying the incoming packets sent by the client (and the outgoing packets sent by the server) to match the version of the game to which the packets are sent."

Re-Logic's implementation would probably be different, allowing console players to play with other console players without having their PC friends host the modded server. But if you are a PC player who is dying to run your own Terraria server, the path to cross-play is already open.

In an interview with PC Gamer last August, Murphy said that cross-play "is certainly an exciting hill to climb, but we're definitely up for the challenge."

We'll see if Re-Logic can reach the top this year.
