'Sims 4' Players Love New Cosmetic Update Including Transgender and Disabled

Thanks to a patch that adds new medical wearables, scars, and shapewear, Sims 4 is getting a little more comprehensive. The Sims update (opens in new tab), released yesterday, adds top-surgery scars and binders for transaffirmers, as well as medical devices on the body like hearing aids and glucose monitors to more accurately and comprehensively reflect the wide, wide world of human experience. They have also added light switches. This is not esoteric slang, but literally a light switch has been added.

All new cosmetics and accessories can be found in the Create Sim section. Hearing aids are in the facial accessories and glucose monitors are in the body category. Top Surgery scars can be added to any teen or older male sim of any build from the Body Scars section. New binders and other shapewear can, of course, be found in the clothing section.

Both disabled and queer members of the Sims community have responded positively to the new options. A deaf player's Reddit thread says the new hearing aids "fill my heart (opens in new tab)," while a transgender player's thread says, "The addition of top surgery scars and binders is great (opens in new tab)." A viral post on Twitter by queer activist Matt Bernstein (opens in new tab) succinctly describes most of the responses in one word: "NICE. I have to imagine that someone somewhere is incredibly excited about that light switch, too.

Of course, there is still work to be done; a popular comment from RainApprehensive2566 (opens in new tab) says they love the update and "hope someday to have wheelchair-bound or prosthetic sims" and that "small epileptic's butt hopes to have a seizure someday too, but honestly, that would be a bit bleak for the game," adding, "I'm not sure I'm ready for that.

This is far from the only Sims update we've gotten in the last few days: a toddler update (opens in new tab) scheduled for March 14, which will soon allow the babies in the game to be unleashed from their cribs and gurgled around the house The article was published yesterday, and we also got a comment from the boss of Maxis that the next "Sims" game will not be an MMO (opens in new tab).
