General
QTEs will be eliminated in the "Resident Evil 4" remake.

Details continue to trickle in ahead of the March release of the "Resident Evil 4 Remake" (opens in new tab), a remake of the 2005 classic that will ditch some of the space-age gaming era's to throw out some of the aspects that made the old game seem clunky and old-fashioned. Rest assured, though, Capcom has made up for it by adding entirely new side quests.

According to Game Informer (opens in new tab), the "RE4" remake adds another headache to the original's inventory-tetris system and implements a knife durability system. Ashley (the NPC who guides and protects you for most of the game) has also been changed from the old fashioned strength bar to a "down but not down" system.

Capcom doesn't provide much information about what's going on in these new side quests, but I'm hoping for more narrative content that will bring us face to face with RE4's ridiculous little lord Ramon Salazar (opens in new tab). What the developers have made clear, however, is that the QTEs are gone. It is empty. They are not coming back. I am outraged.

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I'm going to be bold, cool-headed, and handsome and say it: quicktime events are fine. As long as they can be turned off or mitigated for accessibility, they are perfectly fine as a way to add gameplay tension to cutscenes and have led to some of the most iconic moments in the gaming world (opens in new tab).

Admittedly, the QTEs in the PC version of RE4 are a bit broken. For example, one section with a mine cart is nearly impossible at 60 frames per second, and I genuinely miss it when it's gone. The knife fight with Krauser in a cutscene wouldn't have the same spice if you weren't frantically tapping the controller that was randomly placed on the coffee table when the cutscene started.

If you're not so upset about the QTEs that you're boycotting the game, the boutique page for the Resident Evil 4 remake (opens in a new tab) has everything you need to know about RE4 up until launch.
