EA has reportedly cancelled the single-player Apex Legends game.

According to a new report from Bloomberg (opens in new tab), Electronic Arts has cancelled development of new games based on its Apex Legends and Titanfall series that were in development at Respawn Entertainment The report states.

According to the report, which cites three sources, the cancelled project was a single-player game codenamed "Titanfall Legends" and set in the shared Apex/Titanfall universe. 2022, he Mohammad Alavi was reportedly the director until he left the studio.

That would likely be the project Alavi teased on Twitter (opens in new tab) in July 2021. "We are developing a brand new single player adventure for Respawn Entertainment."

"We are a small but ambitious team with a history of dreaming big and achieving great success.

Alavi's LinkedIn (opens in new tab) page says the same thing, stating that prior to this departure he was "Creative Director of a brand new single player adventure for Respawn Entertainment. Before that, he spent 10 years at Respawn as Narrative Design Lead and Design Director for Apex Legends, and before that, nearly 7 years as Senior Designer for Titanfall.

Such a background naturally led to speculation (or expectation) that the new game would be "Titanfall 3," but alas, it was only speculation: Alavi would not reveal what project he was working on, and Respawn told "Titanfall" fans " Never say never" (open in new tab), giving no more than the cliché "Never say never.

However, a Respawn job posting from 2022 (opens in new tab) seemed to point in a different direction. The job opening was called the Apex Universe FPS Incubation Project and was described as "an all-new Respawn single-player adventure."

Apex Legends is built from the Titanfall setting, and naturally some enthusiasts were hoping that Respawn was trying to camouflage a new Titanfall game. However, the fact that this new project is set in the "Apex universe" could not be overlooked, and many saw it as a change to a meaningful phrase.

Bloomberg reports that approximately 50 people were working on this game when it was shut down; EA will try to move some of them to other positions in the company, but those who cannot be placed elsewhere will be fired.

Whatever this game is, it is not Respawn's only project: EA also announced yesterday that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has been delayed until April 28 (opens in new tab); Apex Legends and Battlefield's development of mobile versions has also been canceled (opens in new tab).
