Platinum Games Teases 10th Anniversary of "MGR: Revengeance" and Fans Huff and Puff the Kopium

Platinum Games has announced the 10th anniversary of "Metal Gear Rising": this outstanding hack-and-slash adventure has taken on a second life as the source of countless memes. The game was originally developed as "Metal Gear Rising" at Konami's Kojima Productions, a specialist in action games, and Kojima Productions came up with the rather brilliant central mechanism of tearing off an enemy's spine to heal yourself came up with the idea.

The game got some (very good) DLC, but has remained silent ever since, despite positive reviews and modest sales there. Considering the subsequent failure of the Konan-Kojima duo and the hiatus of the Metal Gear series, a sequel is by no means out of the question. In the meantime, Platinum has announced the game's 10th anniversary and released new commemorative artwork.

The tweet is an "Announcement of 10th Anniversary Event" and reads (via machine translation):

"On February 21, 2023, "Metal Gear Rising Revengeance" will celebrate its 10th anniversary. On the day of the event, we will be releasing #MGR Anniversary art on the official Platinum Games Twitter to celebrate the 10th anniversary, so don't miss it."

Pretty innocuous.

Nothing out of the ordinary, but all the fans, including myself, are puffing copious amounts of copium while fantasizing about chopping up giant mecha with a katana. Again.

Quinton Flynn, the voice actor for the main character Raiden, recently teased some upcoming Metal Gear news. Interestingly, however, it was apparently meant to advertise a podcast appearance and autograph distribution to coincide with the anniversary (opens in new tab). But hope is not lost yet, as Flynn continues to tweet and retweet about the game's anniversary.

Both Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa have held their own so far, but it is highly unlikely that they will be involved in any future "Metal Gear" projects anyway; an announcement of "MGR: Revengeance 2" seems unlikely, but Metal Gear fans will be hoping that Konami shows some life this year. Metal Gear fans will be hoping that Konami will come alive this year. There have long been rumors that the publisher is planning to remaster the Metal Gear Solid titles, and nothing at all since the post-Kojima METAL GEAR SURVIVE in 2018 is too long for one of the great video game series. Oh well, at least we can celebrate with some art that it used to be good.
