Call of Duty: Warzone 2 is slowly returning to Warzone 1.

Infinity Ward is pushing backspace on some of the most interesting changes it made in Call of Duty: Warzone 2 (opens in new tab). Starting in Season 2, major tweaks to the camps, loot system, and in-game economy will be rolled back to how they worked in Warzone 1.

While it is a bit unusual for Warzone 2 to lose features that distinguish it from the original so soon after launch, the news is a relief for some disgruntled Warzone players. Thin rumors (open in new tab) that player numbers were sluggish over the winter holidays have quickly fueled the narrative that Warzone 2 is dying (open in new tab), even though it continues to be played by hundreds of thousands of people daily. two weeks into Warzone 2's second season. After a delay, an uninspiring Season 1 update, and the destructive crash that has been going on since November, the noisiest corner of the Call of Duty fanbase is beginning to turn its attention (opens in new tab) to the free-to-play battle royale.

Perhaps in an effort to win back these voices, Warzone 2 is slowly returning to Warzone 1 in a few key ways. The first major change came last month when Infinity Ward added loadout drops to purchase stations, reversing one of the sequel's most dramatic meta-decisions; Infinity Ward announced plans for more changes on Twitter last week.

Highlights so far include:

Apparently, Infinity Ward is not done yet. The studio plans to share more details about the changes in Warzone 2.0 in this week's studio blog."

While Warzone 2 is far from a dying game, Activision's eagerness to announce specific changes on Twitter before a proper announcement is unlike the company and gives the impression of trying to preempt negative sentiment. While I am far from an avid Warzone player, I am a little disappointed that some of Warzone 2's smartest tweaks are going away so quickly. I particularly liked the 2 vs. 2 camps, similar to Modern Warfare 2019's "Gunfight" mode, which inspired the idea of the camps in the first place.

Hopefully we'll see more tweaks to Warzone 2 when Infinity Ward elaborates further in a developer blog post later this week. Season 2 begins on February 15.
