Radiohead is one of the great bands of our time, and depending on who you ask, In Rainbows is one of their finest works. The album is particularly memorable for its sudden appearance after the band had been inactive for several years, and for its innovative form of distribution: it was released as a paid download, allowing anyone who wanted to to purchase the latest work of one of the world's greatest big bands for $0.

Currently, creator and composer On4Word is releasing a project called "In Rainbow Roads" (opens in new tab) (YouTube (opens in new tab)). The entire 43-minute album is recreated using the Super Mario 64 soundfont (a soundfont is all the files used to create a given soundtrack). The producers simply say "Dedicated to all toads," a reference to the lyrics of one of the album's best tracks, "Reckoner": "All hue... I dedicate it to all human beings," a reference to the lyrics of the song.

In fact, the song is so great that it received the ultimate endorsement: Radiohead composer and guitarist Johnny Greenwood made a joke about Mario and linked it to this piece.

This is not Radiohead's first encounter with video games: one of the band's most recent projects is the Epic Games exclusive "Kid A Mnesiac" (open in new tab), a bizarre exhibition and Thom Yorke's earlier work " It was a mix of what he calls "mutant re-engineering"; On4Word has also done other Radiohead songs (opens in new tab) (including No Surprises and Paranoid Android) and a great version of an Aphex Twin song (opens in new tab) He has also worked on.

If you have heard "In Rainbows," you should definitely give it a listen. In a way, it is amazing how these two disparate soundscapes blend together so beautifully. The attention to detail in the songs and the care taken to find something comparable to the Mushroom Kingdom is extraordinary. The result is something seemingly absurd, yet eerily beautiful.
