'Dead Space' remake will blur 'disturbing scenes'

Dead Space (open in new tab) is a disturbing game. One of its most iconic moments is discovering a helpful clue scribbled in blood on a wall early on, "Cut off a limb (opens in new tab)." From start to finish, it's a notoriously violent and frightening gore-fest. But if that's not your thing, the new filter in the "Dead Space" remake gives you the option to blur out the worst parts.

"Motive recognized that some players didn't want to see certain types of content that are common in horror and gore games," said Morgan Baker, EA's program leader for game accessibility, in a "Dead Space" accessibility feature in an update (opens in a new tab) about the

This is the first time the game has been made accessible," said Morgan Baker, EA's Program Lead for Game Accessibility, in an update on the accessibility features of "Dead Space" (opens in a new tab).

This is accomplished through two options in Dead Space: one that displays a "non-intrusive pop-up" message describing the potentially disturbing content that is about to appear, and another that completely hides the visuals of the scene: "You can hear audio but the blur effect hides the visuals until the scene is played back," Baker said.

While this may seem like an odd feature to include in a game like Dead Space, which is as unsettling as possible, it is no different than adding a story mode to the game so that those who want to enjoy the story without mechanical headaches can also enjoy it. (Incidentally, the "Dead Space" remake has a story mode option. For example, some players who like to stomp and goof on necromorphs may react badly to the suicide descriptions. Others may want to be free from jump scares once in a while.

The content warning options look like this:

And this is the "Hide disturbing scenes" option:

If you want to use the content filter for any reason, you must go to the accessibility menu and switch on The "Hide Disquieting Sheen" option:

If you want to use the content filter for any reason, you must go to the Accessibility menu and switch it on. It is also unclear exactly what content will be supported, but Lead Senior Experience Designer Christian Simon has stated that it will not include "violence done to necromorphs"

and that it will not include "any content that is not accessible.

"The focus is on scenes involving intense violence against humans, strong psychological horror, and self-mutilation," Simon says. And, of course, there is a lot of subjectivity involved in trying to assess what is disturbing."

The Dead Space remake was released today and is very good: we gave it an excellent 84% in our review (open in new tab) and called it "a new standard for the future of the survival horror series."
