Stray cats raise money for real stray cats

Prepare for cuteness overload: the nice red cat doing cat things game "Stray" is doing great things in the real world, raising money for various cat charities. We spoke with some of the people involved on an American Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) news program.

Brendan Gepson of the Nebraska Humane Society (opens in new tab), an animal shelter, said that in exchange for a $5 donation to their cause, they were able to provide game codes on social media. Says Gepson, "Our first fundraiser raised about $8,000."

The segment featured some very cute IRL rescue cats, including Paro ("She's a little gray tabby with three legs"), whose owner successfully raised over $1,500 by distributing the game for charity. [Rafael Almeida of the Brazilian conservation organization Gatos De Francisco says, "The game is beautiful. 'It's fun to play with the cats.' The goal of the game is to reunite the cats, which is exactly what the shelter does afterwards. [I love this game. The amount of money raised from the raffle is equivalent to sterilizing 25 cats."

Basically, if you want to see some really cute cats saved by the success of Stray, watch this. Annapurna not only handed out the codes, but also made a large donation herself, sponsoring a walkathon to raise $4,000 for the Feral Cat Rescue Fund (the final total raised was over $6,500).

"It was truly amazing (to raise that total)," said Debbie Distanislore of the organization. 'It's just amazing to see a feral cat become the star of a video game. We hope it will create empathy in the feral cat community."

"If you see a stray cat on the street, please help them. We don't need any more big kittens struggling on the streets."

Yes, even this cynicism melts my heart. Who doesn't like cats, and it's nice to see a game that taps into humanity's general affection for animals giving a little back to a cat in need of a little love. If you still can't get enough of feline animals, I've got you covered: there are plenty of videos of cats watching people playing Stray (opens in new tab).
