General
The second most anticipated game on Steam finally releases a video a month before its release.

You may have already forgotten about The Day Before (opens in new tab), first announced as an "open world MMO survival" game in January 2021, with a 10-minute gameplay video (opens in new tab) released in April of that year. Since then, there has been no substantial information about the game.

However, this will soon change, as developer Fntastic says it will release "raw gameplay footage" of "The Day Before" later this month.

Fntastic said in an announcement on Discord (opens in new tab), "We are pleased to announce to those of you who have been waiting for news about our game release. After careful consideration and discussion with our leadership team, we have received approval to share the information you have been eagerly awaiting."

"This month, we will be releasing a live gameplay video in accordance with the many requests we received from the community. The video will showcase most of the features and gameplay elements requested by the community and will give a clear glimpse into the current development of The Day Before."

It's not that unusual for studios to go silent in the middle of game development; what makes the situation with The Day Before so strange is that according to Steam (opens in new tab), the launch is set for March 1. That's just a month and a half from now, and apparently it took "careful consideration and discussion" to decide to unveil the game publicly. Strange, isn't it?

The Day Before is not Fntastic's first cat-kick: before that, it released the well-received survival adventure The Wild Game, in which Chris is forced to eat his own corpse (open in new tab) to survive; Steam's Top Wish List chart (open in new tab), it is also highly anticipated, ranking second only to "The Hogwarts Legacy". It's possible that the silence is a strategy, and if so, it seems to be paying off, at least based on the interest shown on Steam. But it still seems a bit odd to me.

We'll definitely be keeping an eye out for gameplay footage, and what comes after that. In the meantime, I've contacted Fntastic to ask why the studio is so quiet so close to the release date, and will update when I hear back.
