The director of "John Wick" is making a "Rainbow Six" movie.

Stuntman and director of all four "John Wick" films, Chad Stahelski, is taking time out of Keanu's schedule to make a "Rainbow Six" movie. Called "Rainbow," the film will be based on Tom Clancy's original story, rather than on recent video games.

However, it is the same story as the original story of the first "Rainbow Six" game, so fans of the 1998 tactical shooter may be excited to see it recreated on the big screen. The film will follow the 2021 film "Without Remorse," starring Michael B. Jordan and also based on the Tom Clancy novel.

This will be Stahelski's first film as a director outside of "John Wick," and while the gritty action is almost guaranteed, his approach to the story is questionable. Both the novel and the first game are essentially about a heroic CIA fighting an evil environmentalist organization. Tom Clancy's stories tend toward right-wing fantasy at best, but "Rainbow Six" is particularly dated in 2023, and I'm not sure the man who invented the magical assassination hotel can give it the nuance it needs.

The previous film in the series didn't exactly set the world alight either; Without Remorse was originally slated for theatrical release, but went straight to streaming on Amazon Prime, where it was met with mixed reviews. Michael B. Jordan's performance was praised, but the story was condemned by many as generic and formulaic.

Regardless, we will soon find out if this sequel will be a hit, and at least producer Akiva Goldsman will be relieved that the project is headed for production. He first announced his film adaptation plans in 2017, and it was the success of the first "Deadpool" film that led to Ryan Reynolds being tapped for the lead role. It's best not to imagine what sarcastic one-liners the character will spout in between executing members of the villainous Greenpeace.
