Rockstar's most infamous broken game launch, Grand Theft Auto Trilogy, is finally available on Steam at a 50% discount!

More than a year after its disastrous initial release, Grand Theft Auto: Trilogy - Definitive Edition (hereafter simply referred to as Grand Theft Auto Trilogy (open in new tab)) is now available on Steam (open in new tab). And it's on sale.

The "Grand Theft Auto Trilogy" was released at the end of 2021, with Rockstar not only apologizing, but also re-releasing older versions (opens in new tab) of the included games Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas, The mess was so great (opens in new tab) that everyone who purchased the updated GTA trilogy was given a copy of the trilogy.

The situation gradually improved over the course of patches and updates, but one persistent complaint was that it was only available on PC via the Rockstar Games Launcher. This was more than a minor complaint for many PC gamers, especially since virtually all of Rockstar's other games (with the exception of "Midnight Club 2" (open in new tab), which remains MIA, probably for music or other licensing reasons) are available on Steam.

That shortcoming has now been remedied: the GTA Trilogy is now available on Steam, complete with Steam achievements and verification that it is "playable" on the Steam deck. It is also available for $30/£27.50/€30, 50% off the regular price, as part of Rockstar's publisher sale (open in new tab) on Steam until February 2.

Unfortunately, not everyone is happy with the situation. Aside from the addition of achievements, it is unclear how or if the trilogy has been updated for Steam; on Twitter, the Steam release has not been changed since the October 2022 patch (opens in new tab), and at launch It is better than it was, but some fans claim that it is still not perfect.

"Sorry for the angry tweet: ...... Just a little frustrated," Rockstar Intel writer videotech_ tweeted (opens in new tab). We were waiting for Rockstar Games to address some of the biggest problems with the Definitive Edition. And they have the audacity to re-release the game in that state with no patches."

YouTuber Vadim M. stated that there are differences between the Steam version and the Rockstar Games Launcher version, but it is unclear what those differences actually are.

Steam user reviews are just starting to come out, so it is difficult to make any meaningful judgments at this point, but they seem to lean mostly in favor of the game. One GTA: San Andreas user review cites controller support, Steam's track record, and the addition of "stable 60fps," but throws thumbs down anyway because "the Steam community should not be an afterthought."

If you have the time and money, but want to wait and see how Steam's GTA trilogy goes before deciding, Rockstar's publisher sale has other Rockstar gems, including Red Dead Redemption 2 (open in new tab), at a pretty Grand Theft Auto 5 Premium Edition (open in new tab), Max Payne 1 (open in new tab), Max Payne 2 (open in new tab), Max Payne 3 (open in new tab), LA Noire ( (open in new tab), "Bully" (open in new tab), and the ultra-violent masterpiece of yesteryear, "Manhunt" (open in new tab).

We contacted Rockstar to find out how (or if) the GTA trilogy was patched for Steam. Rockstar also confirmed today that the Grand Theft Auto trilogy will be available on the Epic Games Store later this month.
