Disney to revive "Tron" starring Jared Leto

The "Tron" series, cursed with the ability to wear electronic pajamas, ride a motorcycle, and come back to life about once every 10 years, is back.

Deadline reports (opens in new tab) that Disney is in the early stages of negotiations with Joachim Ronning to direct "Tron: Ares." The film is notable as the first in a series of films that have been dormant for more than a decade, and as the first such article I've written that didn't require mention of Amazon (opens in new tab) being involved in any way.

The idea of a Tron movie starring Leto has been floating around since at least 2017, when The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab) first broke the news that Disney was considering the possibility. However, that plan apparently fell off the ice not long after and is now back on the table.

The director's name may not ring a bell, but Ronning is the director of Maleficent: at this point, he is a Disney veteran. His new film, "Tron," is a sequel to 2010's "Tron: Legacy.

Other details are only to be expected from this early film in negotiations, but as of now, light on the ground. I know the screenplay is by Jesse Wigtow, but I'd be lying if I said it meant absolutely nothing to me; according to IMDb (opens in new tab), Wigtow's other work is two shorts and several films between 1999 and 2015, not that it matters to PC gamers. He's writing an upcoming "Thomas the Tank Engine" movie (opens in new tab), so "Tron: Ares" will probably be great.

It looks like Tron is making a bit of a comeback this year. Not only is Disney preparing the film, but Bithell Games, makers of "Thomas Was Alone" and "John Wick Hex," is also releasing a visual novel (opens in new tab) set in the Tron world. Not exactly a lavish Tron-fest, but one gets the sense that someone at Disney has realized that a potentially successful franchise has been sitting dormant for more than a decade and is now trying to probe public sentiment to see if it's worth pulling out of retirement.
