Final Fantasy 16 producer wonders why people think a PC version exists (because Square Enix previously announced it)

Final Fantasy 16 (opens in new tab) producer Naoki Yoshida rather cheekily brushed off the discussion of a PC port, telling fans to "buy a PS5" if they want to play it. He added, "Why is the PC version supposed to be released six months later?" He asked.

It is possible that he forgot Square Enix's own PlayStation Showcase reveal trailer for Final Fantasy 16 (opens in new tab). The presence of a PC version of the upcoming RPG was odd. The aforementioned reveal trailer added a very prominent footnote that while the game was a PlayStation exclusive, it would also be available on PC. Despite this, Square Enix has since seemed to deny the existence of a port at all costs; all traces of a PC version announcement have vanished. The closest we've come is a recent trailer (opens in new tab) that says, "The game will not be released on any other platform until December 31, 2023."

In Square Enix's own words, one of those "other platforms" will inevitably be PC, but Yoshida is being awfully coy about it. During a Mahjong livestream (opens in new tab) of Final Fantasy 14, which Yoshida helms, the topic of a PC port of Final Fantasy 16 came up, and according to a translation by Genki_JPN on Twitter, Yoshida claimed that "no one said anything about a PC version being released." He added, "Why is it that the PC version is supposed to be released in 6 months? He added.

He continued: "Sorry, I was out of line. We did our best, so please look forward to it," he continued. It seems certain that Yoshida cannot or will not say much about platforms other than PlayStation 5 right now, which is understandable. Square Enix would definitely want to see how well the game sells there, since it will be exclusive to one console for six months, and to say anything about a PC or Xbox release would be to poke holes in that plan, which explains why Yoshida is jokingly focusing all his efforts on PlayStation 5. He is not outright denying the existence of a future PC port, but rather that he is successfully redirecting his efforts in the direction of boosting sales with the PS5.

Regardless of Yoshida's comments, the possibility of a PC port in early or mid-2024 seems quite reasonable (open in new tab). Considering the time between the end of the exclusivity deal for Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the release of the PC version, it may be several months before we can play the game after December 2023.
