Marvel's "Midnight Sands" competes with an indie game with a very similar name and premise.

For some time now, I have been very confused by the press release for a game called "Path of the Midnight Sun" (opens in new tab) because of its similarity to "Marvel's Midnight Suns" (opens in new tab). This is not merely due to the fact that the names are similar, but also due to the fact that they are similar in every other way.

"Marvel's Midnight Suns" is a tactical RPG in which heroes use the power of friendship and other tools to fight demons. It's like Fire Emblem with superheroes.

Path of the Midnight Suns is a tactical JRPG in which heroes must fight demons while using tools like the power of friendship. It began as a Fire Emblem mod.

Can you tell it's a little confusing?

Now, this is just a coincidence: Path of the Midnight Suns originated as a Fire Emblem mod in the mid-2010s, and the standalone game's Kickstarter (open in new tab) appeared in 2019. And while the broad premise is remarkably similar to "Midnight Suns," it is surprisingly quite close to "Fire Emblem."

After four years of development, it was unveiled today, and you can see for yourself. Its relationship system is certainly intriguing, with players making decisions that affect the mental state of their allies. These relationships come into play in turn-based battles. There is also cooking and crafting. Other hobbies are necessary.

And since prudish marvels are not involved, you can actually embark on a romantic relationship. What "Midnight Sands" lacked was the ability to date a Blade. That's what makes this film better than its competition. But that's not all. As much as I love Charlie the Hellhound, the dog in "Midnight Sands" is much, much cuter.
