D&D" is being adapted for live-action television by the writer and director of "Dodgeball".

D&D is returning to television following the Chris Pine-starring adaptation of "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." [According to Deadline (opens in new tab), the studio had interest from several buyers, but the streaming service won out with the not-so-great "Halo" adaptation. The show is a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures, with Lawson Marshall Thurber directing the first episode and also writing the script.

The plot and setting have yet to be revealed, but given that he also wrote and directed "Dodgeball," "Central Intelligence," and "Red Notice," it is quite likely that the show will be as much about laughs as it is about goblin slaying. He also directed "The Division," based on Ubisoft's multiplayer series.

Despite the lackluster critical response to "Halo," the series has been a success for Paramount+; Amazon's "Rings of Power," Netflix's "Witcher" series and spin-off, HBO's "House of the Dragon" and other favorites have also no doubt made another fantasy show appealing. There is also the possibility of launching a D&D universe consisting of scripted and unscripted shows.

Unlike the original "Dungeons & Dragons" show, which ran for three seasons in the mid-80s and got at least one kid hooked on D&D (that kid being me), the Paramount+ show will be a live action deal. No word yet on the cast.

While the popularity of D&D and tabletop gaming in general seems to be on the rise, helped by a variety of factors from Pandemic to Stranger Things, things are not going so well for video game adaptations. Last week, Wizards of the Coast reportedly canceled at least five D&D games (open in new tab), but declined to comment on which games were affected.

Paramount+ has yet to announce an air date for the new show, but we'll get a live-action D&D kick on March 31 when Honor Among Thieves comes out.
