A Japanese modder has managed to create something that will simply amaze people of a certain age: The Legend of Zelda on the NES runs beautifully in VR from a first-person perspective. It's like being in a dream from back in the day when all we knew was the NES's 8-bit graphics," wrote creator Sugary Noe.

This will give you an idea of how they feel. Of course, it's hard to credit them now, but Zelda looked great for its time. The strength of its visual design is arguably best demonstrated by the fact that much of what the game introduced is still at the core of the series (including Breath of the Wild's return to the open style of the original).

The game was released in 1986, and this mod is for QuestZDoom, played here on Quest 2 (first discovered by Gamerant (open in new tab)).

The mod is called "The Legend of Doom" and contains the first section of the game. There is something incredible about seeing this 2D world converted into such a perspective and faithfully recreated, and it has the unexpected effect of giving the game world a real sense of scale.

We may be in an era where even PlayStation recognizes that their games should be on the PC, but it would be a cold day in Hyrule to approach an official Zelda here. Of course, there are still people who play Zelda: "Link to the Past" (open in new tab) and "Ocarina of Time" (open in new tab) are playable thanks to dedicated fan projects, and Zelda-themed mods (open in new tab) are available for almost every major title
