General
GOG has quietly ended its Steam import service.

Bad news for those who have been waiting for the return of GOG Connect, a service that allows you to import selected games from your Steam library (open in a new tab) into your GOG collection GOG has finally and quietly closed this service, and the URL is now on the store's redirected to the top page.

Sharp-eyed Reddit users began noticing the redirect about a week ago, even though they could still access the page as of January 1 (open in new tab). However, a GOG spokesperson told PCG, "I can confirm that GOG Connect is no longer supported and has been removed from [GOG's] page."

This is sad news, but not entirely surprising. I can't remember when the last time this service had games available (the service was always for a limited time, and players were given a short window to import available games if they owned them on Steam), and as an ongoing concern on our site The first time it was mentioned was during the Chinese New Year sale a few years ago (opens in new tab). It seems that GOG shared that sentiment, with GOG telling us that "nothing really happened for a long time, so we decided to close it down"

.

Rather than adding Steam games directly to GOG's library (one has to imagine it was always difficult to convince publishers to allow it), players now "connect various platforms via GOG Galaxy (opens in new tab) , create their own game libraries"

and are encouraged to "create their own game libraries.

Still, it's not quite the same as getting DRM-free additional copies of Steam games, so it's a shame that GOG Connect is quietly going to bed, even though it has been on life support for several years.
