Justin Roland, creator of Rick and Morty, was indicted on felony charges of domestic violence and false imprisonment.

Justin Roland, co-creator of Rick and Morty and founder of High on Life Studios Squanch Games, has been indicted in California on felony charges of domestic violence and false imprisonment, NBC News (opens in new tab) As reported, the indictment relates to a May 2020 criminal complaint for events that occurred in January 2020 and had not been publicly reported until today.

The victim in this case was an anonymous Jane Doe, who was dating Rolando at the time of the incident, and the incident reportedly occurred on or about January 19, 2020; NBC reports that the Orange County District Attorney filed criminal charges in May of that year, after which Rolando was arrested and held on $50,000 bail in August After being released on $50,000 bail, he pleaded not guilty in October 2020.

According to court records, Rolando was ordered not to harass or approach within 100 feet of the victim and was required by the court to surrender any firearms in his possession. Details of the case remain sealed and no trial date has been set. Rolando's attorney has reportedly indicated that a plea offer is in the works, but details of that offer have not been released at this time.

Rolando is best known as the co-creator of Adult Swim's popular animated series "Rick and Morty" with Dan Harmon. More recently, he ventured into the world of video games, founding the studio Squanch Games in 2016. Its latest title, High On Life (opens in a new tab), was released on December 13.
