Assassin's Creed" live-action Netflix series loses showrunner

In October 2020, Netflix announced (opens in new tab) that it would team with Ubisoft to produce a live-action "Assassin's Creed" show. Writer and showrunner Jeb Stuart recently told Collider (opens in new tab) that he is no longer involved.

Stuart did not say why he parted ways with Netflix on the show, but said Collider's point that it was related to "differences in vision" was "valid."

"I think the move of the executives from LA to London a little bit created a group in London that unfortunately had to inherit my vision instead of developing their own vision," Stuart said. 'So I think that's fair. So I think that's fair. I think the staff at Ubisoft is great. I think it's a great franchise. It was just a good, mutual timing for both sides to move forward."

By all accounts, Stuart was the perfect choice for the smart, action-packed "Assassin's Creed" series. He has an impressive list of screenwriters (opens in new tab) for blockbusters going back 35 years, including "Die Hard," "Leviathan," "Another 48 Hours," and "Just Cause." In that light, his loss hurts, but despite the split, his relationship with Netflix is likely to remain strong: in 2022, he produced the historical drama series "Vikings: Valhalla" (opens in new tab) for the network (History Channel's " Vikings (opens in new tab), which is now also on Netflix), and is still the showrunner as it enters its second season.
