Asus announces ultra-fast 540 Hz monitors, expensive 27" OLED monitors, and more

Asus has officially announced its entry into the burgeoning OLED monitor market with the 27-inch Asus ROG Swift PG27AQDM, which has a native resolution of QHD 2,560 x 1,440 pixels and operates at up to 240 Hz refresh. Asus is offering this new Along with the OLED panel, the company is rolling out a 540Hz 1080p monitor, a 49-inch 5K monster, and an ultra-fast 160Hz 4K screen.

As is rapidly becoming common with OLED monitors, Asus makes eye-popping claims for pixel response, with the PG27AQDM's GtG response rated at 0.03ms and full on/off response at 0.1ms. Both figures are more than an order of magnitude better than conventional LCD monitors.

Presumably, the new Asus ROG Swift PG27AQDM uses LG panel technology, most likely the same OLED panel as LG's UltraGear 27GR95QE-B (opens in new tab).

Asus has not yet announced a price for the PG27AQDM, but the $999 sticker on the LG version is probably a good indicator. This OLED monitor would be very expensive for a 27" 1440p model.

It will also be interesting to see how much brightness Asus can achieve; Asus claims a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, but we have yet to see full-screen figures; the PG27AQDM has a custom heatsink, which is a good sign. So far, however, gaming monitors that use LG's OLED technology rather than Samsung's have struggled to deliver decent full-screen brightness.

Next up is Asus' new Swift Pro PG248QP for speed freaks, a 24" 1080p panel that uses TN LCD technology with a 540 Hz refresh. the TN method has recently become obsolete, and IPS methods are becoming the norm for quick LCD monitors IPS is becoming the mainstream for quick LCD monitors.

However, TN remains the fastest LCD technology and is essential for high refresh rates; Asus has so far not specified a response time, only stating that the new panel offers a 60% improvement in response time over "standard" TH panels. Pricing has not been finalized at this time.

Finally, the Asus ROG Swift PG32UQXR is Asus' first DisplayPort 2.1 monitor, combining full 4K and 160Hz refresh; it is a 32-inch IPS model with a mini LED backlight consisting of 576 zones It has a brightness of 1,000 nm. Brightness is 1,000 nits. [The Asus ROG Swift PG32UQXR, like other Asus CES screen debuts, is unfortunately not priced. But it will definitely, definitely not be cheap.

In short, Asus has something for everyone when it comes to screen technology at this year's CES. Well, unless you have a slightly limited budget. Don't fret; there's plenty to see and do.
