Cooler Master's latest mechanical keyboard is a disaster of color clashes

Cooler Master exhibited at CES 2023 and introduced its new MK770 mechanical keyboard; the MK770 is not a gaming keyboard, but of course it is a gaming keyboard. Cooler Master says it is targeting keyboard enthusiasts and other "niche needs" at the Las Vegas tech show.

"This year we found a subset of the audience whose needs are not being met 100%, and we hope to fill that gap significantly in 2023," says Dennis Liu, Cooler Master's head of peripherals.

What Liu refers to as "not 100% filled [by Cooler Master]" would literally be the enthusiast keyboard. However, he would not say no to more competition in this area.

Cooler Master's MK770 is definitely a little different from the company's usual offerings; the MK770 features brightly colored keycaps, with several colors to choose from, including green and pink. There is also a brown one.

These are also PBT keycaps, and Cooler Master has nailed one of the key features of its keyboards for enthusiasts: PBT is stronger and more resilient than the ABS plastic normally used in keyboards.

But the interesting thing about the MK700 is that Cooler Master has included RGB LEDs. If the pink, blue, and cream keycaps aren't enough for you, you can illuminate each keycap in the colors of the rainbow. A skilled eye would be able to create something truly stunning, but expect most combinations to be truly ugly.

On the technical side, the MK700 has Kailh Box switches and a hot-swappable PCB. Careful attention to switching between the switches will also extend the life of the board.

The box switches are also very nice, and I appreciate at least a few of the main variations that I have used myself.

Even more surprising is that the MK770 is wireless; the MK770 has both Bluetooth and 2.4G wireless. However, with less expensive boards like the Keychron K2 (opens in new tab) offering this feature, it would at least make sense to include this feature on this premium board.

The problem is that there is no information on the price of this keyboard; if it is significantly more than the price of the Ducky One 3 (opens in new tab), I would struggle to see the value, even with the added wireless capability.

However, if this becomes a general trend at CES 2022, I'll be happy. More maniacal keyboards, please.
