AMD RDNA 3 Comes to Gaming Laptops, Cheaper GPUs Take the Lead

AMD has announced its first RDNA 3 GPU for gaming laptops, and surprisingly, the more entry-level of this generation of GPUs is the first out of the gate.

The Radeon RX 7600M XT was the top chip announced at CES 2023. This fairly mid-range offering is said to have what it takes to compete with Nvidia's mobile RTX 3060 6GB (more cores than the desktop RTX 3060). In a graph shown onstage at CEO Lisa Su's keynote (open in new tab), AMD boasts a 22%-31% improvement over Nvidia's previous generation mobile GPUs, although there were certainly no actual frame rate numbers. [To achieve this kind of performance, the RX 7600M XT is equipped with 32 RDNA 3 Compute Units (CUs). This equates to 2,048 stream processors, which probably means a full Navi 33 GPU. This GPU will run at a game clock of 2,300 MHz, which is the same as reported for the desktop RX 7900 XTX (open in new tab), and will consume about 120 W. This is the same power consumption as the previous generation RX 6650M XT, which is not that unusual for a laptop chip.

The RX 7600M XT offers 42.8 TFLOPs of half-precision arithmetic performance, a rather large step up from the 19.94 TFLOPs of the RX 6650M XT. This is the kind of magic that the RDNA 3 architecture has created, and AMD's latest desktop GPUs also offer fairly significant arithmetic performance gains

.

Nevertheless, there is more to gaming performance than TFLOPS: the RX 7600M XT is paired with 8GB of GDDR6 memory on a 128-bit bus; operating at 18Gbps, memory bandwidth can be up to 288GB/s, with faster memory clocks allowing the RX 6650M XT's 256GB/sec.

AMD's large onboard cache, known as the Infinity Cache, helps meet the bandwidth demands of modern gaming, and the RX 7600M XT comes with 32 MB of cache. The RX 7600M XT comes with 32MB of cache. This seems like a reasonable amount for a GPU paired with a high refresh 1080p and 1440p panel.

The AMD Radeon RX 7600M was also announced today, but it is slightly slower than the XT and has four fewer CUs (compute units).

Then there are the RX 7000S series GPUs, which include the RX 7700S and RX 7600S. Despite the slight name change, these GPUs are fairly close to the RX 7600M XT and RX 7600M in specifications, but are designed to conserve more power and thus run a bit slower.

All of the above GPUs are built using the RDNA 3 architecture and can take advantage of the benefits included in the RDNA 3 architecture, such as the Radiance display engine, AI and ray tracing capabilities, and AV1 encoding support.

Several OEMs are working on AMD Advantage Edition laptops that will incorporate AMD's new 7000 series GPUs in early 2023. These include Alienware's M18 and M16 laptops, Asus' TUG Gaming A16, Emdoor's APX970 and AG958P, and IP3's ARN37A.

Nevertheless, Nvidia also announced at CES 2023 that the RTX 40 series will be included in gaming laptops (opens in new tab). from RTX 4050 to RTX 4090, graphics cards with Ada Lovelace will be included in the full lineup will be available. The high-end chips will be available on February 8, while the mid-range and entry-level GPUs will be available on February 22.
