K-Pop Powering "Among Us"-like Productions Breaks "Among Us" Simultaneous Player Record

Never underestimate the terrifying power of K-pop, as BTS member Kim Tae-hyun's stream (opens in new tab) of the online social deception game Goose Goose Duck has made Steam's most-played chart (opens in new tab). A little more than a month after its debut, the game has already broken the concurrent player record set by its inspiration, Among Us, as Goose Goose Duck reached a peak concurrent player count of 563,677 (open in new tab) earlier today, Among Us' all-time record by more than 100,000 players.

The incredible surge in popularity has actually proved to be a bit of a problem for the game's developers, who tweeted a few days ago that their servers were down under pressure. We expected a significant increase in players, but not as much," the game's official account tweeted, later adding in a reply to a fan that the developer was "in contact with the provider to increase (capacity) significantly." Service was restored within hours (opens in new tab), but it is clear that the game's sudden success took its creators by surprise, similar to how the popularity of "Among Us" took the Innersloth team by surprise (opens in new tab).

If you're not familiar with this latest multiplayer phenomenon or simply a K-pop fan (I'd keep quiet if I were you), let me briefly explain what Goose Goose Duck actually is. In other words, it's "Among Us," but with geese and ducks. To be fair, it extends some of the basics of Innersloth. For example, the "Dine and Dash" mode pits the hapless geese against a team of killer ducks in order to survive until the timer runs out. Goose Goose Duck.

Goose Goose Duck's rise is almost eerily similar. When the latter became one of the biggest games of the last few years, its popularity was due in no small part to Korean streamers (open in new tab). They weren't BTS-level big stars like Kim, but they gave it much of the push it needed to become one of the games that defined the pandemic blockade era.

It remains to be seen if the game will maintain its momentum or if the new stream of fans will eventually return to Among Us. Nevertheless, it has been a little while since Kim delivered the stream, and the game is becoming increasingly popular. Perhaps Amongoose (open in new tab) will continue to be around for years to come.
