Dwarf Fortress' best mod is almost ready for Steam

Praise Armok, a popular mod for Dwarf Fortress (opens in new tab), is moving forward toward a Steam release as Dwarf Therapist has released a pre-release version for the biggest update in Dwarf Fortress history. Dwarf Therapist is well known among the community as one of the leading mods for displaying information from the game's previously maze-like user interface.

The basic use of Dwarf Therapist is a dedicated second window for finding, sorting and managing the vast amount of information within Dwarf Fortress. While the old primary purpose of assigning labor is not yet fully functional, it allows the user to sort, understand, and manage the status of dwarves much faster than in the core game. Sortable views include attributes, personality, happiness, how long the dwarf has lived in the fort, etc.

Updates to the Steam version (opens in new tab) with the new user interface enhancements make some of the things Dwarf Therapist did in the past unnecessary, but the UI still does not allow filtering, sorting, or seamless collection.

Again, this is a test and will need more tweaking before it is up and running. However, the mods that have been used by hardcore Dwarf Fortress players for over a decade are still in the game. Most notably, the automatic labor assignment system is not working. But if you're looking for the classic Dwarf Fortress-like spreadsheets and box-clicking labor experience, you're better off waiting for Dwarf Therapist. [Dwarf Therapist 0.50 Test1 is on Github. (Opens in a new tab) If you don't know even vaguely what Github is, you probably don't... For now, just wait and be excited.

In other Dwarf Fortress-related news, it's been a huge success and it's all your fault. (open in new tab) [11].
