Baba Files Taxes is a real spin-off game that you can play for free.

Filing taxes is terrible; the 2019 puzzle video game Baba Files Taxes (opens in new tab) is great; Baba Files Taxes is a game released this week by the developers of Baba is You, in which good things do bad things.

Actually entertaining, Baba Files Taxes is a goofy take on a procedure that everyone hates, a free goofy little game that mixes both very realistic questions like those found in tax forms and very fanciful ones. Questions like "the respondent's house" or "what are clouds made of?

As an American, I have always dealt with a terrible tax filing process. I've heard that some countries don't have this, but if you're from one of those countries, I honestly don't want to hear about it.

The biggest concern here would be Baba's repeated requests to forge his signature. I didn't know Baba could sign. I didn't even know Baba had hands. I thought he only had feet. I guess I was wrong. Baba can't even hold a pen, let alone type.

In any case, "Baba is You" is the latest in a very enjoyable Hempuli line of games; Hempuli is the common name for developer Arvi Teikari, who has released several new games in the past few years while working on larger new games.

Baba is You is a great game and should be played at some point if you are at all interested in clever games, indie games, word games or puzzle games. We call it one of the best low-spec games on PC (opens in new tab), and for a while someone on our staff kept nominating it for one of the hardest games on PC (opens in new tab).

The review at launch (open in new tab) gave it a whopping 90 points, and since then it has literally doubled in size and added a level editor (open in new tab).

It's definitely the best Sokoban box-pushing game I've played until Patrick's Parabox (opens in new tab) stole my heart earlier this year. It's still better than "Bubba's", but just barely. Just barely.

Baba Files Taxes can be found at itch.io. (open in new tab) The developer, Hempuli, has a blog on his website. (opens in new tab) I myself like blogs very much. Unlike tax returns, I don't like them. Hope you are keeping track.
