Season 3 of The Witcher will be a "heroic send-off" for Henry Cavill.

"The Witcher" Season 3 (open in new tab) will be the last for Henry Cavill. But according to showrunner Lauren Hisrich, at least he is leaving in style.

"Henry has given so much to the show and we want to honor him appropriately," Hisrich said. While the third season was not written specifically for the farewell to Cavill, Hisrich said the subject matter on which the season is based, author Anjay Sapkowski's second full-length novel and fourth "Witcher" book, "A Time of Contempt" (opens in a new tab), is a natural fit for the job He said it was a natural fit.

"What's very interesting is that for me, Season 3 is the closest thing I've done as a one-to-one adaptation of a book," said Hisrich. Of course, you can't do every page, but there were a lot of big action events, plot points, character-defining moments, and big reveals of great evil in The Time of Contempt. With so much to do, we were able to make it really, really true to the book."

"Gerard's big turnaround is to abandon neutrality and do whatever it takes to get to Siri. To me, it's the most heroic send-off, even though it wasn't written to be so. When we return to Geralt in Season 4, he has a new mission. He is a slightly different Geralt than we all expected. And by the way, that's an understatement."

Cavill announced in early November that he would be leaving "The Witcher" after the third season and would be replaced by "Thor" actor Chris' brother Liam Hemsworth (open in new tab). With all due respect to Liam, this news saddened many, including us (open in new tab). It was widely believed that Cavill's departure had something to do with his understandable pursuit of the role of Superman in a film he announced he would return to (open in new tab) in October.

But then he was hassled: after a cameo at the end of Black Adam, new DC Pictures boss James Gunn decided to start over, and Henry and virtually everyone else involved in the last film dropped out (opens in new tab).

Some fans naturally hoped that the loss of the Superman job would pave the way for Cavill to return as Geralt, but Hissrich said that at this point he is not even considering such a thing. "We have plans to continue this work in different ways." I love Mothership and will stick with it, but obviously we will have Blood Origins released. I don't want it to be finished for a while. So I think the possibilities are endless and we'll see what happens."

The good news for Cavill is that he still has plenty to keep him busy after "The Witcher" and "Superman" are done: Amazon and Games Workshop announced last week that he will be working on "Warhammer 40,000" (opens in new tab), a "movie world announced that he has been tapped to produce and star in the "whole thing. He is such a well-known fan of the series that Creative Assembly added him to "Total War: Warhammer 2" (opens in new tab) for the 2020 DLC "The Warden and The Paunch."
