Death Stranding is available for free on the Epic Games Store.

General
Death Stranding is available for free on the Epic Games Store.

Update: Epic's servers were hit hard when they gave away "Grand Theft Auto 5," but the site is back online. The Christmas present is the basic version of "Death Stranding" (opens in a new tab), not the director's cut version.

Epic gives away a new free game every day in the Epic Game Store (opens in new tab) for a few weeks every December. This year, there are already some great games available, including the classic Fallout game and the Christmas Eve present Metro: Last Light Redux. But what a surprise, Christmas Day brought big news: Epic released "Death Stranding: Director'sCut" in December for free on December 25.

We're PC Gamer's Stranding Game Appreciators. Death Stranding is our 2020 GOTY (opens in new tab) and we appreciate all the additions (opens in new tab) that Director's Cut has made to an already great game. Even though the PC version of the game was just released this year and the base game was released three years ago, this is a very fresh present for Epic.

Earlier this year, we reflected on how the pandemic affected the "Death Stranding" experience (opens in new tab). Now, a sequel is in the works (opens in new tab), and that sequel is expected to feature more characters with even more amazing names (opens in new tab).

The Epic Games store is still online as of this writing, although it seems to be having trouble with the load of the "Death Stranding Director's Cut" giveaway. If you are having problems loading the store, please give it a few minutes and try again. You have a full day before it returns to its normal price of $40. If you already own the base game on Steam, the upgraded version of the Director's Cut is on Steam sale for $6 (opens in a new tab).
