Magic: The Gathering Goes Hellraiser with Art by Junji Ito

Several upcoming artist collaborations were revealed on the October episode of WeeklyMTG (opens in new tab), a Twitch show where upcoming Magic: The Gathering cards debut. Most impressive were the cards illustrated by horror manga artist Junji Ito, creator of the book "Uzumaki," which I devoured in a day and couldn't sleep afterward. Even if you're not familiar with his work, you've probably seen the meme "It was made for me!" (open in new tab) meme. It's a unique style.

These were usually designed for Magic's prestigious "secret lair drop" involving variants of existing cards, but Ito is back in the Magic hole, one of the artists for next year's first Magic set, Phyrexia: Everything is One! . It makes a certain amount of sense, given that the theme of this expansion is full-body horror. Under the direction of Elesh Norn, the Mother of Machines, the story is about the bio-machine Phyrexians who tear limbs from their bodies, remake creatures, and re-implant them as metal monsters in order to dominate the multiverse. She is the very character of Hellraiser, a perfect subject for Junji Ito.

Phyrexia Details Revealed: Today on WeeklyMTG (opens in new tab), details of Phyrexia: All Will Be One were revealed. In addition to Ito's art, the book includes a Geiger-esque "Phyrexian Eraser," 10 planeswalker heroes, distorted versions of existing corrupted characters, and a land card representing the remade mechanical hell of the new Phyrexia.

For those playing Commander, two pre-made decks themed "Corrupting Influence" (white/black/green) and "Rebel Rise" (red/white) will be released, along with a collector's booster pack that will sample the rest of the set. Players who like their cards shiny can check out a new card treatment called "foil stamping like an oil slick," and three different "Phyrexian Lairs" will be dropped near the set's release.

Phyrexia All Will Be One (opens in new tab) will be available digitally on February 7 and in paperback on February 10. Traditional pre-release events at game stores will run from February 3 through February 9, in both jump-start and shield deck formats (including one that will give away cards from the then-announced, and completely undisputed, 30th Anniversary Edition of Magic).
