Amazon is producing a "God of War" show from the writers of "Children of Men" and "Iron Man".

It might be easier to write a news story about all the productions Amazon hasn't produced a TV series for. God of War (opens in new tab), a show based on the game's latest title, joins Amazon's roster of upcoming TV projects.

According to Variety (opens in new tab), the "God of War" series will be directed by Rafe Judkins, best known as the writer and producer of Amazon's "Wheel of Time." The show's description is almost verbatim from the plot of the 2018 game (released this January for PC players (opens in new tab)): "After the death of his beloved wife, Kratos, along with his estranged son Atreus, embarks on a dangerous journey to fulfill her last wish: to scatter her bones from the highest peak "

Adapting a game with heavy serious hints from Prestige TV into a TV series seems a bit of an ouroboros, but Amazon seems to think its shrewd team can breathe new life into the story. Cautious optimism is warranted, as in addition to Judkins, the company plans to bring on Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, who worked on "Children of Men," "The Expanse" and "Iron Man," as screenwriters. I mean, they also helped write the script for "Cowboys & Aliens" (open in new tab), but everyone has their off days.

A number of game people are also involved in the project, including those from PlayStation Productions and Sony Santa Monica, the developer of "God of War." In particular, "God of War" game director Cory Barlog will join the upcoming show as executive producer.

Bosses from Sony, Amazon, and PlayStation Productions all issued essentially the same statement. Nevertheless, "God of War" is one of PlayStation's most cherished titles at the moment, and the fact that so many of the production staff have Sony connections is a sign that the company is eager to make sure Amazon has a firm grasp of the direction and quality of the final product.

Amazon is now working on so many video game-related TV and movies that I am losing my grasp. Besides "God of War," the company has projects based on "Fallout" (open in new tab), "Mass Effect" (open in new tab), "Blade Runner" (open in new tab), "Disco Elysium" and "Life is Strange" (open in new tab) He is working on a project based on "Blade Runner" (opens in new tab). And "ToeJam & Earl" (opens in new tab), which is being produced in collaboration with the NBA's Steph Curry. Folks, if you have a screenplay you're working on, why not send it to Amazon? Amazon seems to be up for anything right now.
