Henry Cavill to Produce and Star in the Entire Film World of Warhammer 40K

Official Announcement. After rumors circulated that Henry Cavill was in talks with Amazon to produce and star in the Warhammer 40K series (opens in new tab), an official announcement confirms that it will happen. Well, that's about it. The reality is better: it appears to be an entire cinematic universe, not just a TV series.

The deal was announced on the Warhammer community site (opens in new tab) and confirms that Amazon Studios has officially acquired the rights to produce Warhammer 40K merchandise: the W40KCU (the cinematic universe of Warhammer 40K of course) will "parallel GAW's ongoing efforts to create the world's best miniatures." The announcement also confirmed that Henry Cavill will star and executive produce "in all of Amazon Studios' films."

"For 30 years I have dreamed of seeing the world of Warhammer in live action," Cavill wrote in an Instagram post (opens in new tab).

"After 22 years in the industry, I feel I finally have the skills and experience to bring the Warhammer Cinematic Universe to life.

Cavill also expressed his excitement for the deal in his announcement. I've loved Warhammer since I was a kid, and this moment is really special for me," he said. The opportunity to lead this cinematic universe from its inception is a tremendous honor and responsibility. I couldn't be more grateful to Vertigo, Amazon, and Games Workshop for all their hard work in making this happen. I am one step closer to realizing my lifelong dream."

For Cavill, who is stepping down from a major role, this is a victory. Last month he announced that season 3 of the Netflix series The Witcher would be his last (opens in new tab), and that Liam Hemsworth would take over the role beginning in season 4. Last week, he also announced that he would not be returning to his role as Superman (opens in new tab) and dropped the red cape. The latter news came just a few weeks after he said he would be returning to the role (opens in new tab), so the whole thing was a pretty big shock. Nevertheless, he will be happy and busy enough for the foreseeable future as he works steadily on his Warhammer projects.

Sadly, there are no hints as to what the first Warhammer 40K project will be. Games Workshop announced an Eisenhorn TV show (opens in new tab) under Big Light Productions in 2019, but updates have been silent since then. If possible, Amazon Studios would be a great first option to pick up. There are also plenty of Warhammer 40K novels (opens in new tab), so there's no doubt that Cavill will be reaching for his favorites to adapt for the silver screen. Amazon knows how to make a great series, so we can't wait to see how this collaboration turns out.
