PSA: One of our favorite games of 2021 is available for free on the Epic Games Store starting today.

To celebrate the holiday season each year, the Epic Games store speeds up its weekly game giveaway (opens in new tab) to a daily drop, allowing you to keep a new game free every morning. What has been offered so far is, don't get me wrong, good stuff, and I'm not taking anything away from Horizon Chase Turbo or Costume Quest 2. In his review of the game, Nat Clayton declared that "Sable's lonely, heartfelt journey of self-discovery will stay with you forever" and gave it an enviable score of 93%. Sable is currently available on the Epic Games Store (opens in a new tab) today, December 18, through tomorrow at 11 a.m. (EST) / 8 a.m. (ET) / 4 p.m. (GMT) from today, December 18, until tomorrow at 11 a.m. (ET) / 8 a.m. (ET) / 4 p.m. (GMT).

I remember following the development of this chilling open-world exploration game for years and being overwhelmed every time developer Shedworks shared a new snippet of gameplay footage. Sable's cel-shaded art style, a tribute to influential French illustrator Jean Giraud Mobius, is as stunning as the look that broke out in Wind Waker. Gameplay aside, "Sable" is truly a visual feast and should be experienced.

Sable does not have a massive open world, but it is large enough, handcrafted and full of surprises that you will never get bored. It follows the brilliant trick of Breath of the Wild in offering only a fraction of the map at a time, and it's full of the devilish puzzles and platforming challenges that for me were the highlight of BotW's gameplay. Peak Sable is about encountering unexpected stony ruins and crashed spaceships in ruins, and finding secrets and treasures hidden deep within them.

Sable was previously available on PC Game Pass, but that service was discontinued in October; even if Epic is not your main launcher, it is absolutely worth logging in and getting Sable if you don't already have it. I played it at the Steam launch and envy anyone who is about to tackle it for the first time.
