DMA developers at odds over origins of first "GTA" with dinosaur motif [Updated

Update: The designer of the original GTA prototype refutes this testimony, telling PCG that "there was no such thing as a dinosaur tech demo." Instead, the first version of GTA 1 included a chunk of code created for an early prototype of a game called Attack, which was "based on cavemen and dinosaurs. Somehow it got distorted by memory into a more tortuous storyline in which the dinosaur tech demo became "GTA 1": imagine a better world. Imagine a better world where the sun shines, the wine sparkles, and the "Grand Theft Auto" series is not starring crime men, but giant dinosaurs. Dinosaurs, too, are probably involved in crime.

It's a world we could have had if the original "GTA" prototype had been different, according to former DMA (now Rockstar North) developer Colin McDonald, who spoke to the BBC (open in new tab) on the 25th anniversary of "GTA 1," the original "GTA ' game was just a technology demo with "dinosaurs walking around and destroying buildings," he said. Kind of like the top-down "The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction" (opens in new tab).

Even though it was obvious that Godzilla Theft Auto would be a hit, DMA developers changed their focus when someone brought cars into the game. McDonald told the BBC, "Someone came up with the brilliant idea of what it would be like to drive a car instead of controlling a dinosaur," and "all of a sudden it was no longer a dinosaur game, it was a car game." [Thus GTA was born. It wasn't long before someone wondered what would happen if players could get out of their cars and jump into other cars. The developers didn't think the game would catch on (open in new tab), but they were still playing it on their lunch breaks.

Apparently, turning your dinosaur technology demo into the beginning of one of the most famous series in video game history comes with some problems. The bugs that arose when the game suddenly went from a story about lumbering dinosaurs to hijacking cars was "a very frustrating process" for the team. But that didn't stop them from taking the time to add things like sound effects and radio stations to liven up the world a bit.

The rest is history; GTA is a behemoth that makes more money than some country (open in new tab), and we all live in a world where you can't turn Liberty City into Jurassic Park. in the GTA 6 leaks (open in new tab), Lucia and Jason Maybe I missed the part where you stop playing and start playing with Bernie. It's not too late, Rockstar, you can still get this series back on track.
