Sonic Frontier" to add four playable characters, new modes, and more in 2023

Sega has revealed three updates to the future of Sonic Frontiers that will appear next year.

All are free and range from small features to entirely new stories and playable characters. The first update will introduce a jukebox and photo mode. It will also add a new challenge mode, but there is no further information on what that will be, other than a few vague screenshots.

The second update celebrates Sonic's birthday, which according to Google is June 23. This update will probably be delivered around that time. It should also add open zone challenges, a new Coco, and further increase Sonic's speed and maximum number of rings. As if Sonic wasn't already fast enough.

The biggest and most exciting update is the final update scheduled for late 2023. It will feature an entirely new storyline and dashing new playable characters. It's been a while since Knuckles, Tails, and Amy have been playable in a Sonic game, and a new Sage will join them.

Sega seems to have big plans for Sonic Frontiers, and hopefully these major updates will go some way toward mollifying the game's pros and cons. I didn't have the best time when I previewed the game at Gamescom (opens in new tab). Daniella Lucas, on the other hand, in her Sonic Frontiers review (opens in new tab), felt that even though the game was fun overall, it was "messy, overly complicated, and slow to start." However, the game struck a chord with many new and returning Sonic players, and was even judged superior to Elden Ring (opens in new tab) according to user review averages.
