Why is this $10 Warzone skin the best selling on Steam?

Call of Duty players are scrambling to purchase the new $10 CoD League skin pack themed on LA Thieves (opens in new tab), which, at the time of publication, ranked 19th on Steam's Top Sellers list (opens in new tab) (Kotaku (open in new tab) discovered). In other words, sales of a single "Call of Duty" have surpassed those of "The Elden Ring," "Grand Theft Auto 5," and "Destiny 2."

Now, not to take anything away from Thieves, but can they really push a $10 skin pack into the Steam Top 20 based on its popularity alone: the pack's pitch-black, tacticool urban camo up (Thieves' home jersey ) could be what buyers thought was the second coming of Roze (opens in new tab), the Warzone 1 skin infamous for its unintended camouflage effect on players.

Roze's matte black appearance made the skin difficult to analyze in low light and indoor environments, effectively making it a paid sneaking suit straight out of Metal Gear. Indeed, players uploaded clips of themselves failing to spot their Roze-clad opponents only feet in front of them (open in new tab), painting the "Hey, what was that?" and "Hmmm, must be a rat" behavior of video game guards in a new, more sympathetic light.

Some players (opens in new tab) on the Warzone subreddit (opens in new tab) are already looking forward to Roze Revival, but I don't think it's necessarily decided yet. We ourselves have yet to encounter LA Thieves, but it is possible that Warzone/Modern Warfare 2's updated lighting engine is blunting the benefits of darker attire; a patch issued during the MW2 beta specifically in low light areas It addresses player visibility and does not make it that much harder to spot existing skins that are mostly black. The bright cherry red LA logo on the skin's chest also definitely makes this skin pop.

Additionally, one Reddit commenter, piracyismoral (opens in new tab) (views expressed by a random Redditor username do not necessarily reflect those of PC Gamer or Future media companies) has pointed out that MW2/Warzone 2's sunny desert environments may make all-black outfits easier to find; whatever the effect of LA Thieves' sneaking suit, it could bring back the old Marine trick to CoD, thus driving skin sales. The potential to do so is certainly impressive.
