Marvel's "Avengers" Designer Removed as Spokesperson for Offensive Tweet

Crystal Dynamics announced that Brian Wagoner, Marvel's Avengers design lead, "will no longer be a spokesperson for the studio" or the company's projects, after an offensive tweet he posted earlier was brought to light by the community. announced that he would no longer speak publicly about the company's projects.

The tweets in question, posted over a period of years dating back to at least 2011, were racist, ableist, and homophobic: most of them reflecting basic right-wing talking points such as black-on-black crime (open in new tab) and the civil rights of US President Barack Obama (open in new tab) reflected the same. Most of the tweets have been deleted, but in a 2020 tweet still posted, Wagoner describes himself as a "Trump supporter (open in new tab)."

Wagoner apologized after the tweets surfaced and said he takes "full responsibility for hurting my followers, my community, and the people I work with."

"I have learned and grown since that time and what I posted does not reflect who I am today," Wagoner tweeted on November 21.

"If you cannot accept my apology because of the pain I have caused, I understand. I will continue to listen, learn, and work to better myself."

Waggoner joined Crystal Dynamics in April 2021 to help rebuild Marvel's The Avengers, which had been in the doldrums since its release in 2020. Since then, he has become the game's best-known representative, thanks in part to an incredibly awkward (and hilarious) moment during a live stream Waggoner was participating in when plans to add the She-Hulk to the game were leaked. However, just minutes after Wagoner posted his apology, Crystal Dynamics announced that he would no longer be taking on that role.

Crystal Dynamics tweeted that it was "incredibly disappointed to see the words and views of an employee that are not in line with our studio's values. I apologize to our community and to my colleagues who are rightfully upset by the content." Brian will no longer be in contact as a spokesperson for the studio or about studio projects in the future."

The studio's message above states that Waggoner is no longer a spokesperson for the studio, but Crystal Dynamics left it unclear whether he still works for the development company. We contacted the studio and will update if we hear back.
