Armor-piercing rounds in Modern Warfare 2 no longer penetrate armor.

Armor-piercing rounds in Modern Warfare 2 no longer penetrate armor.

A new patch for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (opens in new tab) finally fixes one of the game's long-standing glitches. Unchecked since the game's release, Modern Warfare 2's armor-piercing rounds no longer penetrate armor. Huh? Yes, that's right. In a patch note consisting of mundane bug fixes and balance tweaks, Raven made a puzzling adjustment to the way AP rounds work in MW2. The patch "removed the damage multiplier for armored enemies," meaning that armored enemies now do the same damage as regular ammo. Welcome to the new world of ammunition that respects armor.

Now, the patch does not render AP ammo completely useless. They can still be used to do more damage against enemy vehicles and killstreaks, but we have to admit that the name means very little in this new configuration, and MW2 would have been better off changing it to something less deceptive. As it is, many players will wonder why anti-armor rounds are bounced off the enemy like BB rounds.

Whatever the reason, players in the Modern Warfare 2 subreddit (open in new tab) are making fun of the change for nothing; a user named Bstempinski predicted that in the next update "hollow points will make enemies move faster and slide cancel to be possible," and a top-class comment in the announcement thread reads, "It's just ammo now. Since this is the Internet, some people are banging on their keyboards in anger, but few welcome the change or the lack of (message) surrounding it.

After all, it's not that Modern Warfare 2 doesn't need a patch, it's just that this update is odd. In the last few days alone, players have been exploiting bugs to turn into speedy, murderous primates (opens in new tab), even though they are not glitching into Superman-like flight (opens in new tab). To be fair, these glitches may be too much fun to fix, but hopefully future patches will consist of bug fixes and not something that makes tracer bullets less visible.
