Here's the SSD you need for Black Friday.

If you're looking for a good deal on an SSD for Black Friday (opens in new tab), the SK Hynix P41 is the way to go. It may not be a brand most people pay attention to, but its specs speak for themselves (7,000 MB/sec read and 6,500 MB/sec write, respectively).

"This is a very good drive," we said in our review of the 90% SK Hynix Platinum P41.

"It goes toe-to-toe with WD's new Black SN850X, Samsung's upgraded 990 Pro, and the usual Phison E18-powered suspects.

If you've never heard of SK Hynix, the company is actually a big company. Despite its little-known brand name in the West, it is the second largest RAM chip maker in the world after Samsung, and you've almost certainly used a PC or cell phone with an SK Hynix chip in it, even if you didn't know it.

The few negatives we found with this drive ("gets just a little hot," along with "subpar 4K performance," referring to a type of random read/write) are that it is slightly more expensive than competing drives like the WD Black SN850.

The SK Hynix P41 was a close second, thanks in part to its price. With this 35% discount, I would flip this ranking for a purchase this Black Friday; the SN850 is also on sale at various retailers, but even after the discount, you'll spend $230 to get a 2TB drive equivalent to the P41's $170. The SN850 is by far the best choice for an SSD right now.

This is the first time the Platinum P41 is on big sale, so this is a great opportunity to get one of the best NVMe SSDs while it's in the prestigious #1 spot.
