Warzone 2 crashes plague players, especially in DMZ

Warzone 2, especially the new DMZ extraction mode, is fun, but for some players, frequent crashes are causing deep-seated losses; a DMZ player who lamented on Reddit (open in new tab) after a crash, "This is the 6th time I've lost max loot" recently Not the only Warzone player to see the dreaded "This application has unexpectedly stopped working" message.

"I played four games yesterday, and in every game one of them crashed," one player replied.

"Happens at least three times a night," said another player.

It seems that this Call of Duty: Warzone 2 crashing problem is not just happening to players with strange PC settings or old drivers. I myself have experienced several crashes in regular Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer, and the large number of complaints on Reddit suggest that the problem is indeed widespread.

"Are there any Warzone/DMZ players on PC who haven't experienced daily crashes?" one poster asked (opens in new tab).

According to the patch notes (opens in new tab), the Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 updates delivered yesterday address two specific causes of crashes: one crash related to parachute deployment and the other to Windows Focus Infinity Ward also states in the patch notes that they "continue to improve stability," but crashes as a general issue are not acknowledged outside of Activision's general support page (opens in new tab).

Infinity Ward says that Raven Software will handle the details of future Call of Duty: Warzone 2 updates and will focus on communications regarding Modern Warfare 2. We have asked both for comment on the crashing issues that seem to be affecting both games and will update this article if we hear back.

In the meantime, players have shared adjustments they have made to prevent crashes. A common form of advice is to say, "I tried this, but I don't know if it had any effect. Here are the most common suggestions I've seen, which may or may not do the desired thing:

Call of Duty: Warzone 2 currently has a Steam user review average of "Mostly Negative," with negative reviews (at least the " CoD Trash" variants or higher) frequently mention technical problems. However, complaints about the technical state of Warzone 2 do not necessarily discourage interested parties from trying it. I haven't had any crashes in the first few days after launch, and it runs basically flawlessly on a Core i5-9600K and Nvidia RTX 2070 Super. Since it's free, the worst that can happen is that a problem arises and I have to leave it waiting for a patch.

Infinity Ward and Raven Software will have more to say about the crash in the coming days and weeks. We will continue to monitor the situation, but if you don't hear from us, look for updates on the Call of Duty blog (opens in new tab), the official Warzone 2 Trello board (opens in new tab), or the Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 Steam updates section ( Open in new tab) for the latest information.
