The social menus for Call of Duty: Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 were apparently broken on the day the battle royale sequels launched. Players reported that when they clicked on the social buttons in Call of Duty's main menu, they were immediately returned to the main menu and could no longer view or group their friend lists.

I ran into the same problem, but thankfully, players had figured out a reliable workaround (shared by Netoxicky on Reddit (open in new tab)) to invite friends to groups. It turns out that the social tab is not the only way to view the friends list.

However, this is no longer an issue now, as Infinity Ward has introduced a fix for both "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" and "Warzone 2" that resolves this issue.

And that's it: if you still have the glitch, restart the game. Nothing could be easier.
