Warzone 2 players like everything except the looting of "Microsoft Excel"

Call of Duty: Warzone 2 (opens in new tab) has arrived and, of course, the glowing anticipation has now turned to frustration; Warzone 2 has attracted so many players that there will always be some complaints, and in fact, when covering the original One of the difficulties was figuring out what were genuine problems and what were just players complaining.

I spent a few hours last night running around in DMZ mode, and I see complaints that are entirely consistent with my limited experience: Warzone 2 is a loot shooter, both in normal play and in DMZ. Everything about the game's controls is as slick as FPS design can be. Movement is surprisingly pleasing, navigation is easy, and combat is intense, brutal, and precise. It's an exceptional joy to hold in your hands.

Then we get to the ...... Enter the looting part; the most frustrating part of the early DMZ mode is that the backpacks are so small that you are often forced to move items in and out of them. Items are stacked flat on the ground, and you have to squint to read multiple descriptions, and then precisely align the cursor over the item you want to pick up.

As one player put it, looting in Warzone 2 "feels more like using Microsoft Excel than playing a video game."

There are significant similarities here with PUBG, which is a step back from Warzone's super-fast looting. This is a system that wants to make looting dangerous, and it certainly does, but it feels like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Some players demonstrate how not to loot backpacks.

The balance of risk and reward is at the core of Warzone 2, but so far the loot system feels like a bit of a step backwards; I have fond memories of throwing cigarettes away for loot in PUBG, but the pace of that game is nothing like Warzone 2.

One can understand why Infinity Ward would attempt something like this; part of Tarkov's magic, which is a big inspiration for DMZ, is that looting is probably the most dangerous thing you can do. Some of the ways in which "Warzone 2" seems to echo this, such as not being able to look around, being slow to acquire each item, and turning a hyper-octane flagfest into a stationary inventory management game.

But it's not all fun and games. Complaints have come and gone about nearly every aspect of the game during the launch fiasco. RedSkinFan654 writes, "The loot interface in general is terrible." Even if you just pick something up, the name of the item remains in the center of the screen where the name of the item is on the ground; if you pick up three or so items, it's just a series of letters."

Looting is the only part of "Warzone 2" that doesn't feel right, and I get frustrated with a game that makes me cycle through little icons and replace low-value trash when all I really want to do while playing is get back into the fight. From what I've heard from fans so far, it seems I'm not the only one.
