In 2022, my favorite city builder got a major update

It still seems a bit odd that Crate Entertainment followed up its 2016 dark fantasy ARPG Grim Dawn with a medieval city builder. Especially since keeping citizens alive and healthy through winter storms, marauder incursions, bear attacks, and more epidemics than a medical journal is brutally difficult.

Farthest Frontier (opens in new tab) entered Steam Early Access in July and quickly became my favorite city builder of the year due to its gorgeous looks, deep farming system, and annoyingly clever bandits who rob my town of its gold and run away! I've been working on it for a few years now. After several patches since then to address bugs and add quality of life features, version 0.8.0 arrived today.

First and foremost, this update adds more architecture that everyone wants in a city builder. This update brings 12 new buildings that provide new decorations and entertainment for citizens. Festival poles provide entertainment for the surrounding community, so there is no need to rely on huge theaters and pubs to please the villagers. You can also build and upgrade new decorative trees, flower urns, decorative fences, and additional squares to increase the likability factor and provide new ways to make your town look unique.

More minor changes include the ability to set minimum and maximum production levels for resources. This means that if workers produce enough of something, they will leave their specialized jobs and return to the general labor pool, which should help your town run more efficiently.

Settlers will also generally have better AI when it comes to working and transporting supplies, "reducing frustrating instances of people stopping in the middle of a task or dropping items all over town." Hazles! Villagers would also prefer shelters near their workplaces instead of going home every night. When a fire breaks out, the entire population will no longer rush to extinguish it. As a result, most people will continue to do their jobs and not end up with 100 water buckets scattered all over town afterwards. Another hassle. [When different jobs such as roads, walls, and maintenance are done at the same time, "the builder distributes himself among these jobs until they are all completed." A large job, such as building a long road or a wall, is no longer considered one project, but several building operations.

In addition, building repairs can now be prioritized and houses now display more detailed desirability information. In addition, tutorials and tooltips have been added to make it easier to understand the various complex systems in Farther Frontier. In addition, improved notifications, an improved terrain flattening tool (yay!) ), improved cow behavior (cows can now graze and poop in fields, but will happily eat crops if you're not careful), and many technical improvements, there is much more to the update.
