Gearbox acquires "Risk of Rain."

The Embracer Group's Q2 interim report (opens in new tab) was truly a blowout for the former Gearbox. Not only was the studio left to oversee Volition (opens in new tab), the developer of "Saints Row," but the report quietly announced that Gearbox also acquired the "Risk of Rain" series.

In a statement posted on Twitter (opens in new tab), Gearbox said that "after years of publishing work on 'Risk of Rain 2,' we have developed a deep affection and respect for this IP," and that it will "deliver world-class content" and " said it would strive to ensure a "bright future for this genre-leading franchise.

In other words, Gearbox's first order of business is to bring the "Survivors of the Void" DLC for "Risk of Rain 2" to consoles, but the studio also teased a "special passion" it is working on with Hopoo, the original developer of "Risk of Rain project," and also teased a "special passion" that they are working on with the original developer of "Risk of Rain.

Hopoo had little to add to the announcement, simply stating on Twitter (opens in new tab) that it was "great news" for "Risk of Rain" fans. When pressed by nervous fans to clarify what the acquisition meant for the future of the series, Hopoo at least elaborated that it meant "More RoR" (open in new tab). However, it remains to be seen whether "more RoR" means "better RoR" (or at least "comparable RoR").

Gearbox better hope they know what they are doing with this series. Most of the replies to Hopoo's and Gearbox's tweets announcing the acquisition consist of increasingly esoteric memes conveying fear and hostility. Meanwhile, the #1 reply comment to the announcement of the "Risk of Rain" subreddit (opens in a new tab) simply states, "We've wiped ourselves out. Good luck, Gearbox."

Regardless of how Gearbox steers the ship, we quite like "Risk of Rain 2" (opens in new tab), praising its chaotic multiplayer "ups and downs" and its irresistible ability to climb the power curve (opens in new Open in new tab), hoping that Gearbox's experience in publishing this game makes them familiar with the series' features, but if not, we'll always have "Petrichor V" (open in new tab).
