Riot Games has announced a new women's League of Legends stand-alone tournament called Rising Stars. The goal is to "promote inclusion and opportunity in esports," and each team must be composed entirely of women 16 years of age or older.

This is not an event on the scale of LoL Worlds, but one that looks to the future. The inaugural event will take place online on November 26 and 27 this year and is open to players from other European regions, although it is aimed at the Nordic region, which Riot defines as the UK, Republic of Ireland and the Nordic countries.

Those interested in participating can register here until November 22." Player registration will include a collaboration with DivE, an organization that promotes gender diversity in esports, which already supports Riot Games' [Valorant] Game Changers tournament and Wild Circuit Game Changers' operations in EMEA. "Gender verification will be included," the press release states.

"In addition, moderators will be present throughout the tournament to ensure a safe and supportive space for all participants.

The phrase "gender confirmation" is not elaborated on in the official materials provided. However, the agreement Riot signed with DiVE regarding the Valorant Game Changers program states that "age, place of residence and gender will be verified by DivE to confirm eligibility [...]. In particular, DivE will require you to present a webcam as proof of eligibility; DivE will not keep any record of the documents used to verify your age, gender and place of residence."

Valorant's ongoing Game Changers initiative will begin in 2021, a program intended to create "new opportunities and exposure for women within Valorant esports."

"Riot Games is committed to increasing opportunities for female gamers," said Riot's Will Attwood. Game Changers has been a huge success for Valorant and we plan to expand it to other games in the future, and Rising Stars, as a local, independent tournament, is another example of the work we and our partners are doing to promote diversity and inclusion in the esports community." We are also more than happy to support students who are looking to take their first professional steps in this industry."
